V-KOOL International Forms Sustainable Energy Division

While energy-savings serves as a long-term mantra for the window film industry—all the way back to its inception—in recent times, the product finds itself swimming in a sea of retrofit options wearing the same tagline. Under the circumstances, it comes as no surprise that film manufacturers are beginning to adopt the strategies associated with the latest green movement, drawing on such terms as “renewable” and “sustainable.”

In February 2009, 3M announced a reorganization in which the company placed its solar control films under a newly formed Renewable Energy Division. 3M officials say grouping window film with other energy-saving products enables cross-platform technology sharing and solutions. At its most recent national dealer meeting, window film manufacturer Huper Optik announced a new strategy in which the company’s dealers would no longer simply be window film dealers, but energy experts—offering additional retrofit products. One of the latest to add a keyword from the green movement to its strategy is V-KOOL® International. The Singapore-based window film manufacturer recently announced the formation of an IQue® Sustainable Energy Division, which company officials say is aimed at harnessing the full potential of its advanced thin-film technologies and global franchise network. The company has appointed Peter Wong to head the new division.

“I am very proud to lead this newly created division as I believe that in the current global sustainable energy market, customers will benefit directly if they can have the best products and technologies served to them from a single source,” Wong says.

The new IQue® Sustainable Energy Division will focus on dealing with global entities with offices around the world to bring about energy management solutions through what company officials are calling a “holistic approach”—the same term Huper Optik chief executive officer Faisal Nasir assigned his company’s latest strategy of offering various energy-saving products in addition to film. V-KOOL International officials say its new approach includes services ranging from glass fenestration review and energy measurements, to energy audits for commercial property owners like hotel chains and shopping malls, among other commercial property types. The division will be supported by V-KOOL’s offices in Singapore, Dubai, Taipei, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Houston and its global architectural franchise network.

In Taiwan, a new relationship with automobile manufacturers Nissan and Volkswagen is designed to merge V-KOOL’s aftermarket products with the automotive side of the green movement. The two auto manufacturers have teamed up with the window film manufacturer to offer what are being labeled “green” automobiles. For a period of two years, a total of 55 Nissan and 45 Volkswagen car showrooms in Taiwan will offer V-KOOL window film products as part of their standard package for all car models.

“We are very proud to partner with Nissan and Volkswagen’s efforts to incorporate ‘green technology’ like V-KOOL® advanced climate control coating into their cars to enjoy fuel economy and reduce CO2 emission into the atmosphere,” says Cindy Lin, general manager of V-KOOL® Taiwan.

Though the impact of solar control films on fuel efficiency in automobiles continues to be debated industry-wide, V-KOOL officials say based on test reports, a car coated with the company’s films is expected to derive at least 3-percent greater fuel efficiency, produce 291 lbs fewer carbon dioxide emissions per year, and improve passengers’ “time to comfort” by 25-percent.

“We are very pleased to have found a partner in V-KOOL® whose green attributes are in line with Nissan’s corporate social responsibility plans of contributing to a more sustainable environment,” says Tain Ci Song, PDI factory director for Nissan Taiwan. “More importantly, going green will help our motorists decrease their carbon footprints and fuel costs by enhancing fuel efficiency amidst the challenging economic environment.”

These results aren’t likely to find their way into the U.S. market any time soon, as they include cutting up to 94-percent of infrared heat gain through the front windscreen.
