From Skin Cancer to Bird Safety:’s Five Most-Read Stories of 2014

It was a good year for window film, but what did our readers pay the most attention to on Was it news about mergers? Tint-Offs? Or birds?

When government officials speak, people tend to listen. This was the most-read story of 2014 and marked a shift in the type of customers tint shops are seeing. As George Sanchez, manager of Tint & Detail Shop in Rockville Md., said, “[The surgeon general’s report] can really help us … We’re getting more and more people being referred by dermatologists for UV protection.”

This story marked another growing trend and conversation topic in the industry: bird safety. While some films are more reflective and “attract” birds, others can be used to deter birds from flying into glass. This is a topic we will definitely be following in 2015. Our international tint-offs always generate a lot of buzz in the industry and this year was no different. Congratulations, again, to our top prize winners, Chris Peterson of D&L Window Tinting in White Marsh, Md., Les Helton of Performance Window Tinting Inc. in Carrolton, Ga., and Jose Julio with Protective Solutions in Holliston, Mass.

Suntek Window Films is now owned by Eastman Chemical Company. Is this a good thing for tint shops who use Suntek? The jury is still out on that.

This year’s SEMA event was packed with nearly every major window film company, but when we asked them show what they were displaying, most showed off their paint protection film.

Blog of the Year: The Window Tint Dot Matrix Dilemma

Blogger Patric Fransko’s first blog of the year remains his most popular. In this one, he talked about how to apply film in such a way that dot matrix areas look “good and consistent.”
