On Monday, January 5 at 6:45 a.m., Jeff Gomez, owner of The Tinting Spot in Columbia, Mo., received a call from police saying his business had been robbed.

Jeff Gomez’s business, The Tinting Spot, in Columbia, Mo., was robbed overnight.

“We were one of 12 businesses that had gotten broken into,” he says, but there was something different about what was stolen from his shop. “They stole cash from everybody else. Here, they stole cash and all our window film supply. They’ll probably sell it to [another] shop for $50/roll.”

Gomez, who lost a week’s worth of revenue and two weeks’ supply of film, thought that was the end of his business.

“We tint for all the dealerships here,” he says. “We were concerned we were going to lose our accounts because we couldn’t handle the business they were sending us.”

But the dealerships “understood” and gave his shop time to recover. That move was the first of many made by people in his local community and the greater window film network that helped Gomez expedite the recovery process.

“I immediately posted it [to the Window Film Professionals Group] on Facebook. I wasn’t asking for handouts, I just wanted to tell my story. The outpouring of support was unbelievable,” he says. Tinters, distributors and manufacturers including Scorpion, Maxpro, Valiant Tint, Huper Optik and SolarFX sent him tools, supplies and even film at no charge. The total amount of film he received will last him two weeks, he says, which is exactly the amount of inventory that was stolen from him.

“I’m fully recovered because people sent me film and [after being on the local news], people from the community came and checked on me and [gave me their business],” he says.

Gomez has already taken steps to make sure something like this doesn’t happen. “We’ve installed cameras and alarm systems on the doors and windows,” he says and encourages other tint shops to do the same so that something similar will not happen to them.
