Window Film Franchises Make Franchise 500 List

Entrepreneur Magazine has released its list of top 500 franchises for 2015 and three companies that offer window film services—Ziebart, Window Genie and Budget Blinds—are all on the list.

Becoming part of the list is no easy task and neither is compiling it. According to, the process began in July 2014, when the magazine asked franchisors to participate in a survey. Each submission was vetted before being entered for data analysis, and 927 companies made the first cut. Of those, the top 500 made the Franchise 500 ranking, based on financial and statistical data from July 2012 through July 2014.

“[A]ll companies, regardless of size, are judged by the same criteria: objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation,” the website reads. “The most important factors include financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system. We also consider the number of years a company has been in business and the length of time it’s been franchising, startup costs, litigation, percentage of terminations and whether the company provides financing. Financial data is analyzed by an independent CPA.”

One franchisor to make the list was Ziebart at No. 171, which offers window tinting, automotive glass repair and replacement and other services. It was founded in 1959 and has more than 360 locations worldwide, approximately 160 of which are based in North America.Ziebart Shield logo

The website lists the investment needed to open a Ziebart location as $172,000 to $331,000. The agreement is for 10 years and renewable, with a $30,000 franchise fee and a 5 to 8 percent royalty fee. A net worth of $250,000 and approximately $100,000 in liquid cash is needed.

“Ziebart International Corp. is proud to be included in Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2015 Franchisee 500,” says Daniel Baker, president. “… In 2015 Ziebart International Corp. is celebrating 56 years as a franchisor.”

The franchise’s 2015 ranking is up a whopping 173 places from 2014, when it ranked No. 344. It also ranked at No. 297 in 2013, 153 in 2012 and 288 in 2011.

Coming in at No. 196 was Window Genie, an architectural window washing and tinting franchise. The company was founded by Richard Nonelle in 1994 and now has 210 locations, up 24 from last year.NEW LOGO

The company was previously ranked 190, 195 and 196 in the last three years respectively.

“We’re extremely proud to make Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list year after year,” Nonelle says. “We’ve been ranked in the top 200 for three years now. As a system we’ve experienced consistent growth and improvement together, and our consistent rankings reflect that team effort.”

The investment to needed to open a Window Genie location is $89,000 to $139,000 with a 10-year, renewable agreement. The franchise fee is $32,000 to $57,000 with an ongoing royalty fee of 7 percent. A net worth of $150,000 and approximately $40,000 in liquid cash is needed.

Also ranked at No. 50 was Budget Blinds, which sells window film.

Past tinting franchises to make the list include Tint World, which ranked No. 380 in 2013.

  1. Having spent time with ziebart executives this weekend at the IFA convention in Las Vegas, I was impressed with the sense of young, renewed energy their leadership team has for such an established brand.
