Sharpen the Sword

‘Tis the winter time and we in the industry are beginning to see and feel the lull. For those of us who are veterans of the up-and-down business cycle, we’re accustomed to this experience. We’ve planned for it and won’t skip a beat this season.

During this winter, challenge yourself. With more time on your hands for the up and coming months, this is an opportunity to “sharpen the sword.” Now’s the time.

Sharpening the sword is a great phase to remember because it’s a metaphor for refreshing something. Knives get dull and need to be sharpened from time to time so they can be just as effective as when they were first used. That’s exactly what everyone’s business needs, no matter how successful they currently are. We can always work on something to make it either more cost-effective, efficient, or make it add overall value to the business.

How is the digital side of your company? Do you finally have time to get that Facebook page started? How about updating your website with some pictures of your most recent installs instead of some old photos from when you first started the business? How is your reputation on Google, Yelp or any other review site? Are you still writing out hand receipts? Maybe it’s time to upgrade your book keeping to an accounting software program like Quickbooks. How about adding an incentive program for your staff to give back to them so they feel more valued? Have you finally decided on that new product or service you want to launch for the New Year?
This list can get quite lengthy. Think long and hard about what your company needs and work on it. Reflect on the things you’ve wanted to do but haven’t put in the time and effort to make it a reality. Write them all down and pick two or three that are realistic to accomplish. Then, do it! Yup, that’s right. Follow through with you plan instead of procrastinating like many of us do. It’s called goal-setting.

These goals need to be measurable and realistic. And when I say realistic, that means something you can actually attain. Last but not least, put a measure of time to it so you know when it needs to be done. It’s a good practice to have and will work if you put in the effort.
So make that list and check it twice. Make 2016 the year you didn’t make excuses and got on track to accomplishing some long-awaited goals. And if you need some ideas, I’m always available to discuss it. I wish everyone a happy and a health 2016.

Exceed expectations every day!
