Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association (IWFA), is on a mission to see continual progress for the industry. In his seminar, Smith discussed IWFA activities and efforts—from new programs to the state of the window-film industry.

“We need to provide educational materials to all levels: architectural sides, film dealers, consumers—all of them,” explained Smith.

He also noted that awareness is growing, and it’s only going to get better through the combined efforts of all industry people. “Our approach to awareness is in a good position to keep seeing growth,” said Smith.

Window film is the only product that’s not an actual window to be rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), and Smith wants to ensure it stays that way. Plus he emphasized the need for film to allocate additional ratings from a new organization, the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC), founded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The non-profit group rates the energy performance of window attachments.

“It is so important for our industry for film to receive an Energy Star rating,” he says. “It would be a huge win for us.”

He closed his discussion by assuring attendees that the organization is keeping a close watch on film state laws. “We’ll continue to monitor and react to any efforts to change state laws on automotive film use,” he said.

The International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ is being held through today at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter in San Antonio. Stay tuned to windowfilmmag.com for more from the event.
