Time to Invest?

There are two types of people in this world: Those who hate change and those who welcome it. From a business standpoint, I hope you identify with the latter considering how quickly industry products, technology and trends evolve.

As one industry member said to me this past October, “Kat, most dealers these days aren’t just tinters—I find the term ‘vehicle installer’ to be more appropriate as these guys get into PPF and vinyl.” And right he was.

I recently finished writing the spring issue of PPFMag, which includs a report on the industry’s top dealers—a first for the magazine, and I was happy to see how well dealers were doing with their PPF side of the business. I can’t say I was too surprised, though, since both the 2017 International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ (WFCT) and SEMA Show indicated the market was poised for growth. But what it does show is how the market is changing and evolving, with more dealers adding PPF into their business model.

Which brings me to the question: Are you?

If you haven’t jumped on the PPF wagon yet, but have been considering it, now might be the time to act—for a couple of reasons.

First: The top five PPF dealers from across the U.S. averaged just shy of $2 million in sales for 2017. Many reported that it’s one of their fastest growing segments; one company is even building a second location just for PPF because the demand is so high.

Second: Another common theme among the top dealer applicants—ceramic coatings. The product’s been around for a few years now, but it’s quickly replacing waxing and sealants. Many consider PPF the upsell, so now there’s the opportunity to upsell the upsell.

Third: If you haven’t had the financial capital to purchase a plotter, this could be the year to make the investment. With the new tax plan in place, companies can write off the full cost of new equipment. (For more information on this, as well as what the tax-reform bill means for your company, be sure to see the extensive feature in the March/April issue of Window Film magazine—I don’t want to spoil all the fun, if you call taxes fun.)

Hopefully 2018 is your year of change.
