Recent Fire Destroys Shop But Donations Continue

December 12th, 2018 by Emmariah Holcomb

Early last week a fire destroyed Daniel’s Auto Glass, a window film and auto glass business, in Bassett, Va.. The building was a total loss. The shop’s owner, Daniel Hanks, was left with no office nor tools to tint customer’s windows or repair or replace windshields. But then the industry stepped in to help Hanks in his time of need.

Though the cause of the fire has yet to be determined by investigators, those in both the window film and auto glass industries are now helping one of their own. 44 Tools has even taken the liberty of donating a few items.

“We are in the process of putting together a care package. I think it’s so cool that a competitor [an industry professional] can show compassion like this in a time of need. We are also honored that he reached out to us to help! When Bo and I took over 44 Tools we made it our goal to make a positive impact on the industry whenever possible. This was yet another perfect opportunity to do so,” said Bill Valway, 44 Tools partner.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first life changing fire for Hanks, according to WSLS 10, there was a fire that took the lives of his two young children decades ago. After that tragic fire Hanks was able to continue in the business with his own business.

One long time industry professional also saw this as an opportunity to help and give back. A fellow “filmer” and competitor went on a window film specific page on Facebook requesting donations of any tools or materials to help Daniel’s Auto Glass get back on its feet.

“I’ve been in the industry for 28 years and I went on the page to help out because I believe it was the right thing to do,” according to the long time industry professional.

Those who know the owner of the shop described him to be a person who focused on his family and his business.

“He has a big heart,” the industry professional said.
