Gary Benoit Inducted into Window Film Hall of Fame

September 3rd, 2019 by Emmariah Holcomb

This year’s Window Film Hall of Fame award ceremony honored Gary Benoit.

Gary Benoit of Solar Gard is the newest member of The Window Film Hall of Fame, a program that recognizes and honors those in the window film industry who have made lasting and far-reaching contributions. Benoit is the sixth inductee, and the awards are sponsored by Window Film magazine. He was honored during the International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™, being held in Indianapolis today through Friday.

“It’s an honor for me to accept this award for Gary. We’ve all been in this business for a long time and the number one thing I’m proud of is, after I’m done with window film, I know I’ll have one friend in all of this and that’s Gary Benoit,” said Rob Garlo, Solar Gard national sales manager.

Benoit’s inventive and entrepreneurial spirit is an intrinsic part of his makeup. That drive to create, along with a love of cars, runs in the family.

In the 1970s, he started tinting cars–beginning with his own and moving on to his friends’. Soon this became more than a hobby and Benoit, like his father and grandfather before him, realized the dream of owning his own company. Benoit bought the company he purchased his film from, and Florida Sun Control opened its doors in 1978.

Florida Sun Control was located next to a sign shop which allowed him to learn about the sign-making process. He became intrigued with the sign shop’s vinyl-cutting and plotter system. Fast forward to 1995 when he started developing ComputerCut, a computerized system that pre-cuts window film. In 2001 Solar Gard acquired ComputerCut and tapped Benoit as lead consultant and trainer. This allowed him to travel the world and train thousands of technicians on the window film and paint protection applications of ComputerCut.

In 2011 Gary became a full-time employee of Solar Gard. He currently works for Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics in its ComputerCut technical services division.

Unfortunately, Benoit was unable to accept his award in person as he was unable to attend the event due to Hurricane Dorian. Garlo accepted the award on his behalf.

  1. People who should be recognized for their contribution to the industry are the likes of Joe OBrian the founder of SunGard, Mr. Martin the founder of Llumar Mr. Joe Wadlinger from Madico. These were the players who gave their lives to our industry when it comes to the manufacturing of window films. They were around in the 1970s.
