In the Summer, Sales Float Too

Chris Brooks loves sailors. The president of Kauff’s Tint in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and winner of several International Window Film Conference and Tint-Offs (WFCT), beats the summer heat by servicing several boating clients.

“I think there’s a need for tinting that goes beyond cars, take boats for example,” said Brooks. “Yes it might seem intimidating at first, but once you start and become decent at it customers will keep coming back to you.”

Brooks says this recent installation also used paint protection film and ceramic coating.

Brooks does a few vessels each month, a normal amount for Florida. He also recently finished a boat installation with a built-in ceramic coating. “I really like trying new products and there’s about 20,000 boats in Florida that are large enough to keep business going in what would typically be slower months. So my boating clientele isn’t impacted and despite what’s been going on with COVID-19 they still keep coming in,” said Brooks.

Diversification in services is something Brooks attributes to the lack of “slow-time” at Kauff’s. His window film business is booked two and a half weeks out right now, which is a good problem to have. “It’s really good to have other sales options for your business, I mean we’ve had jobs that vary in price from a few hundred to a few hundred thousand dollars,” said Brooks.

Keeping Customers Past the Summer

The relationship you have with your customers should be highly valued.

“The biggest thing is honesty with your customers. I’d rather tell them the truth on something and lose their business then to be dishonest and go back and forth with them over a job,” said Brooks. “There have been several customers that have stayed with me over the years, but it’s not until they truly understand why you do what you do [that they trust you].”
