The New Guy—Striving for More in the Sunshine State

Even as a journalist on the sidelines, the competitions at this year’s International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ (WFCT) were intense. The attention to detail, the passion, the focus and the fight were all on display, and as a fan of competitive sports, for me it was a spectacle. There may have only been nine official winners, but the competition’s victors extend far beyond the Sunshine State.

“A lot of the competition was steep,” said 2021 PPF Gold Medalist Nick Blek of Premier Armor Inc. in Corona, Calif. “I didn’t think I had it but I was pleasantly surprised. Walking through and seeing some of the other bumpers—as a competitor—it was disheartening because you want to win. But at the same time, seeing these guys and how good they are, it brings a lot of value to the competition. It’s not just some kind of arbitrary competition. These guys really are good at what they do, and I’m really proud to compete alongside them.”

After receiving his trophy in the 2021 Automotive Tint-Off™, Jason Teasley of Tint Pro in Springdale, Ark., shared a similar takeaway.

“I pick up stuff off of one-year guys and 30-40 year guys,” Teasley said. “If you’re not continuing to learn, you’re done in the industry. Every day is a new day.”

Teasley is right—every day is a new day. It’s clear that this batch of competitors are never satisfied; they’re always looking to tune their tinting strategies and top out their skills. My takeaway? These professionals are never too good to get better. That’s their point of separation. Whether you were in the heat of battle, a spectator with a front-row seat or a virtual attendee, these duels offered an opportunity: the opportunity to get better.

As our Meet the Winners series continues today, former and future champions are undoubtedly preparing for the competitions to be held in September 2022. WFCT 2021 didn’t just educate me about this industry’s skill—it pushed me to always strive for more. Here’s to getting better, one story and one tint job at a time.
