It’s the Only Thing

It’s been quite some ride for me in this weird wacky window film business. I’ve spent more than 20 years thinking about ways to grow the business from when I was a manufacturer’s sales rep, then the national sales manager at 3M and also as an independent window film dealer.

When I say “thinking” I really mean obsessing about this business and constantly trying to be better than I was yesterday, by copying the very best ideas and strategies or discarding the things that don’t work.

Perspective

I’ve seen a lot of things, made a lot of friends and, to be candid, quite a few enemies over the decades. Love me or hate me, there’s no in between. The one constant thing however, has been an overriding desire to win. Every day presents another challenge to get business and defeat my competition.

For me, finishing second isn’t fun. Like Lombardi once said, “winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” There is no substitution for winning. No “participation trophy” can take its place.

Persistence

The world has a way of trying to defeat you.

There are obstacles along the way like bad hires, bad luck, a crappy economy or days of nothing but rain.

And there are a lot of people telling you why something can’t be done.

There are so called experts and young MBA’s with shiny new ideas and mumbo jumbo about Maslov’s hierarchy needs and Six Sigma Black Belt training.

There are “sea gull” managers who fly in, crap all over you and fly out!

It’s enough to give mean eye-rolling headache.

Focus

Winning starts with your own state of mind.

It doesn’t matter which window film product you promote or the town you live in. It doesn’t matter what you look like or where you’re from. The first step towards success is your own attitude and desire to accomplish the incredible.

Every one of you have what it takes, the winning difference begins and ends with you!

I’ve seen the best in the world of window film. You can spot the winners a mile away.

There’s a bit of a swagger look in their eyes and a sense of humor, pride and a willingness to take risks.

I used to tell dealers I was the smartest and hardest working person they would ever meet in this business. They would look at me like I was the craziest person they’d ever met. We’d laugh and I’d take them out to lunch or dinner while trying to figure out what I could do to help them become the best, most profitable business owner they could be.

Execution

Twelve years ago, I started my own window film business. I’d say it wasn’t a well-planned out process, but it was fueled by ego, anger and a compelling desire to do the impossible. I took what I’d learned from the best dealers in the country and with my son, built one of the largest dealerships in the USA.

As Dizzy Dean once said, “If you did it, it ain’t bragging!”

Every one of you can be the very best. Step up—I can sure use the competition!
