Getting Decorative

By Emmariah Holcomb

Want to learn more about the decorative market? Randy Hutson, owner of Five Star Window Coatings in Grand Rapids Mich., will soon share a trend he sees coming, as well as some photos of memorable projects. To learn more about entering the decorative glass market, make plans now to attend the International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ June 7-9 (wfctevent.com) in Orlando. Hutson is one of two speakers at the seminar Entering the Decorative Market who will advise what film companies need to know to add this segment to their offerings.

“I’ve noticed more and more printable projects versus standardized decorative film,” says Hutson. “On the commercial side, we’ve been getting more requests for personalized and custom designs.”

Hutson says more customers are trying to create their own identity through different window film options. But an increase in unique designs could cause companies to reallocate funds and efforts elsewhere if the demand slows down. “The information I’ve received from construction companies, glaziers and other subcontractors is that the projects for the foreseeable future have slowed down,” Hutson says.

He anticipates his commercial decorative installations to go through a slight slowdown as well. To combat this he aims to focus on different forms of advertising. “You always have to go in with a plan,” he says. “We’re going to shift gears and spend more money on advertising and on cold calls to make up any deficiency in our existing customer base.”
