Patent Not Pending: Jeff Rutherford Granted One
Jeff Rutherford’s company, NiRoLL Lighting’s Tintlight, was granted a patent on December 20, 2022. Rutherford celebrated the milestone for the invention, which the patent cites as a “lighting apparatus and method for application of window tint to automobiles.”
“Receiving this patent means I’ve passed the biggest hurdle and milestone,” Rutherford says. “Receiving this allows me to license my product to a manufacturer. Manufacturing has been harder than I thought, and building the Tintlight by hand has been a struggle. I have had a hard time keeping them in stock.”
To the Top
Climbing to the top of the Automotive Tint-Off™ is arguably the greatest feat of the International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™. According to Rutherford, 2022’s winners all used his Tintlight. “This felt like a triple crown win for me in this industry,” he adds.
Champions Jason Teasley of Tint Pro and Accessories, Lowell, Ark., Daniel Munoz, Honest Tint, Yucaipa, Calif., and Maksim Kutsenko, Sun Stoppers Glass Tinting, Charlotte, N.C., all used the product.
Rutherford said it took four and a half years to get his invention patented. “COVID has been my biggest delay in getting this patent. Then the United States Patent and Trademark Office had a clerical error and delayed the process by another three months.”
A low price point is at the forefront of Rutherford’s goals.
“My dream was to make an affordable Tintlight so that any and every installer could afford it,” he says. “Once I get my product licensed to a manufacturer, I am hoping to achieve this.”
