Two-Year Trends

Time flies when you’re having fun, and I have had a great time covering the window film industry. I celebrate two years at WINDOW FILM magazine on April 26, and I’m thankful for your support. With March 1 here, let’s take a look at the top trends during my time at the magazine.

The Top Stories

From football to window film, analytics are everywhere. I use Google Analytics as a trend tracker, creating metric reports to determine the topics drawing your interest. Here are the 10 most-read stories published by myself and my incredible team of bloggers from April 26, 2021, to February 28, 2023.

Hawaii’s T&T Tinting Specialists completed a transaction to become 100% employee-owned in October 2021.

1. Tractor Tinting: Is it Worth the Trouble? (Published on January 12, 2022)

“Decatur, Texas, is filled with farmland. John Deere, Kubota, Case IH and New Holland dealerships supply the region’s farmers with tractors for cutting and bailing hay. John Little owns All Pro Window Tinting in Decatur and has been cooling down tractors since he began tinting them in 1990.”


2. New Jersey Introduces Two Tinting Bills (Published on March 9, 2022)

“The New Jersey legislature has introduced two bills with potential industry implications.”


3. Female Film Stars Find Voice for 2022 (Published on December 8, 2021)

“The women of the window film industry will kick off 2022 with a different form of customized artistry. Prominent female film stars will ring in the new year by launching a calendar titled the Women of Automotive Film. Ten women comprise the calendar’s pages.”


Chris West, XPEL’s director of automotive films, started blogging in 2022, making an immediate impact with his storytelling abilities.

4. Five Mistakes New Shop Owners Make (Published on May 4, 2022)

“Let’s talk about some of the mistakes I commonly see new shop owners make. The five I’ll cover are errors I made—and learned from—the hard way. If you avoid these, you’re off to the races.” – Chris West, XPEL’s director of automotive films.


5. XPEL’s Chris Hardy Discusses Wholesale Pricing Changes (Published on January 4, 2023)

“WINDOW FILM magazine caught up with XPEL’s director of sales Chris Hardy to discuss a wholesale pricing shift and the market conditions facilitating the move. The conversation follows a social media post centered on the changing conditions, which generated 280 comments as of January 3.”


6. Owners of T&T Tinting Specialists Turning Company Over to Employees (Published on October 12, 2021)

“Hawaii’s T&T Tinting Specialists, Inc. has completed a transaction to become 100% employee-owned through its newly-created Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The company was founded in Honolulu in 1982 and provides the installation of window films, paint protection films (PPF) for vehicles, solar, security and graffiti protection films, and custom glass graphics for residential and commercial buildings in the state.”

Eastman has acquired several companies over the last two years.


7. GM Files Patent For Display System With Window Tinting Capability (Published on November 23, 2022)

“GM Global Technology Operations LLC has submitted a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a display system that can tint the windows of a vehicle. It could be incorporated into one or more windows of a vehicle as well as navigational and driver assist systems. ‘By tinting several of the windows, the controller limits greenhouse effects when the vehicle is parked on sunny days, such that there is reduced energy needed to cool the vehicle,’ GM writes. ‘Additionally, there may be situations in which the sun load is so substantial that it may be difficult for air conditioning systems to cool the vehicle to the temperature desired by the occupants.’”


8. Eastman to Acquire PremiumShield (Published on September 13, 2021)

“Eastman Chemical Company has agreed to acquire the business and assets of Matrix Films, LLC, marketer of PremiumShield performance films, including its extended line of automotive film patterns.”


9. The Inflation Reduction Act Extends Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credits (Published on September 7, 2022)

“The nonprofit International Window Film Association (IWFA) announced that as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) signed into law on August 16, 2022, residential energy efficiency tax credits have been extended through 2032 and may apply to window films.”


10. XPEL Announces Multiple Acquisitions in North America (Published on October 1, 2021)

“XPEL Inc., a global provider of protective films and coatings, has announced the acquisition of five businesses in the United States and Canada from two sellers.”
