Do You Know Your Numbers?

March 13th, 2024 by Matthew Darienzo

As they say on Shark Tank, always “know your numbers!” Financials in business can be complicated or boring but they are crucial to understanding how to make the right decisions. Without the right information on cash flow, profitability, margins and the financial health of the business, you’re flying blind. In times of inflation and high labor costs, it’s more important than ever to make sure your business is set up for success.

It is essential to learn the basics of your financials and analytics and how they relate to your business. Even if you’re not the one who does the financials, find a trusted person to provide you with this relevant information. Fortunately, in the window tinting space, our business is relatively simple with film and labor being the driver of most costs. These numbers are critical in understanding where your pricing needs to be as film and labor costs rise.

Think of your Profit and Loss statement as the scorecard for the health of your business. While it doesn’t tell the whole story, it can help guide your business decisions. The healthier your financials and profitability, the more you can reinvest in growth and capitalizing on the trends you spot, the more you can steer your future business.

Small business owners can be tempted to get “creative” when it comes to financials. While this can be beneficial for tax purposes, it can also hurt your own visibility into how the business is performing. Without accurate information, you can be putting the long-term health of your company at risk. Additionally, when looking for financing, banks rely on clean financials to determine whether or not to loan you money.

Staying on top of margins, profitability and costs may not be fun but it is at the core of any successful business. Diving deeper into your financials may uncover opportunities that could transform aspects of your business you did not see before, and drive your business for future success.
